Generations Ahead, NAPAWF, Sister Song, 2008 and 2009

Generations Ahead along with Sister Song and National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum mobilized a diverse array of groups to take action against a bill that would prohibit abortion for “sex selection” and “race selection” in order to eliminate “discrimination against the unborn”.  The three organizations coordinated a conference call, a letter to Congress signed by multiple organizations, and a strategy session to counter the bill.  The call, letter and strategy session seeded an unprecedented coalition of reproductive rights, reproductive justice, anti-violence, LGBTQ and women’s health groups, while the strategy session itself resulted in three active working groups.  These working groups are now the foundation for countering future threats to reproductive rights and justice, and for developing racial justice approaches to emerging genetic and reproductive technologies.

Generations Ahead, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), 2008-2009

Generations Ahead has worked with PPFA to build their internal capacity to understand the implications of reproductive and genetic technologies for the pro-choice movement. In 2009, Generations Ahead will be working with Planned Parenthood to increase state affiliates’ capacity to respond to proposed legislative bans on abortion for sex and/or race selection. The two organizations will develop a toolkit addressing a variety of genetic technology issues for state affiliates, who can use the materials to develop policy responses based in reproductive justice principles.

Generations Ahead, Choice USA, 2008

Generations Ahead and Choice USA are collaborating on a campaign, Egg Donation Campaign, that will provide website pages with comprehensive information specifically geared toward young women considering egg donation and a Recommended Questions Sheet women can use with clinics and egg brokerages to guide them as they consider whether to donate eggs. College women are increasingly targeted with egg donation ads offering up to $100,000 for “high SAT scores, tall, athletic, blonde, with good genetic makeup.”  Choice USA will work with youth activists to get Campus Student Health Centers to direct women toward these educational materials and raise awareness of the social justice concerns about this increasingly popular economic alternative for young women.

Generations Ahead, ACLU – 2007

The Gender and Justice Program (now known as Generations Ahead) of the Center for Genetics and Society and the ACLU of Northern California hosted a three-day retreat that brought together California advocates committed to advancing reproductive rights and justice.  The purpose of the retreat was to discuss ethical, political, and policy issues related to new reproductive and genetic technologies. The retreat was meant to provide a safe space to hold these challenging conversations; build the capacity of key leaders and organizations to engage with these issues internally within their organizations, externally, and at the policy level; and to begin charting a path forward with the California reproductive rights and justice movement to ensure that policy, advocacy and activism related to these issues reflect the values of inclusion, democracy, and equity.
